RIC Clarke Science Center Renovation Underway
BTGA is currently working diligently on the renovation of the Clarke Science Center at Rhode Island College. Built in the 1960s, the building has served the Physical Sciences program but is now in need of significant upgrades. The Cannon/BTGA team has been engaged to modernize the center, including a substantial addition and a complete gut renovation.
Modern science education requires diverse spaces that support various teaching and research activities, which were not part of the original design. The renovated center will cater to everyone from first-year students to graduate researchers, with lounge areas, collaborative classrooms, and state-of-the-art labs designed for active learning.
The redesign features improved natural lighting through new windows and a two-story opening, enhancing connections to the campus quad. Accessibility upgrades include a new entrance with an elevator and ramp, facilitating easier access for all students.
Environmental sustainability is a priority, with plans for LEED Gold certification. Efforts include using efficient mechanical systems, recycling construction waste, and a solar-ready roof for future installations.
The renovations are a collaborative effort among Cannon/BTGA, Rhode Island College, Colliers Engineering, and Dimeo Construction Company. We eagerly anticipate the completion of this project, which will create a modern, functional academic environment for years to come.
