The Maddock and Nicholson buildings are joined historic structures situated right on the edge of the beautiful Brown University green space. BTGA was tasked with improving the accessibility of the buildings by adding a lift at the entry and bringing the fire suppression system up to code with new sprinklers and fire alarms. Preserving the historic appearance of the interiors was of the utmost importance, so great care was taken to hide the new fire systems in plain sight. Millwork was crafted to match the existing historic detail and used to cover up the unsightly but necessary equipment. Variances were obtained in order to preserve an existing ornamental staircase which would otherwise have had to be altered. All of these upgrades were added with minimum disruption to the existing historic structure.
