Goddard State Park Masterplan

Goddard State Park is known for being one of Rhode Island’s most popular attractions with miles of trails, recreation areas, and even a golf course. The property is speckled with historic features from Native American artifacts, structures dating back to the 1600’s, and the 1890 Looff Carousel, originally built in New York and eventually relocated to the Park in 1931. DEM hired our team to reimagine the Park’s main beach area, where concerns that sea-level rise would jeopardize the usefulness of this space in the future. After assessing their current structures, analyzing projected climate change effects, and developing a program that meets current and future needs, our team presented a site and building design that would allow the space to be used now and in the future. The main building will be located further from the beach, with a series of tiered levels that are designed to protect the main structures as sea levels continue to rise over the next 80 years. The site is also designed to be universally accessible, comply with LEED Sites (the first in RI), and include creative ways to incorporate the connection and education of the natural environment.
