Rhode Island State House Dome & Murals Restoration

BTGA was retained by the State of Rhode Island to investigate and mitigate leak issues on the third floor of the RI State House. With Wiss, Janney, Elstner Associates as consultant, BTGA designed a program of water testing and site monitoring to identify weaknesses in the exterior shell and assess the impact of condensation within interstitial spaces. Recommended repairs were completed in 2012, and additional exterior stone restoration work and interior plaster and historic painting repairs were completed in 2013.

BTGA was the retained to repair and restore the murals within the historic RI State House Dome. Close inspection of the murals revealed peeling and damage not evident from the lower floors. BTGA executed a general cleaning of all surfaces within the rotunda dome and staircase space walls/windows and trim above the second level. The plaster at upper dome level and around the occulus was cleaned, repaired, and painted. Cleaning and repair, including gilt work and side wall repainting, was also performed on the water-damaged Four Freedoms mural, successfully returning the dome to its original glory.
