Smith’s Castle

BTGA reviewed the exterior shell of Smith’s Castle and provided an Historic Structures Report identifying rehabilitation needs, directed restoration work to be done that fit within the Associate’s current State Preservation Grant, and provided a final report identifying work completed. Our report gave an overall history of the property, a construction history, our firm’s architectural evaluation of the exterior of the building existing conditions, an outline of maintenance requirements, and recommendations for proposed work with budget estimates. The report created a single source document that the Association can use going forward to plan for building maintenance needs and apply for future grant funding for restoration and repair work. The construction renovations included siding repair, structural stabilization, installation of historic gutters and downspouts, re-roofing of the main house and ell, and a new replicated front door for weatherization needs. We were able to reuse salvaged exterior trim and siding found in the basement to replace damaged areas.
