Tiverton High School Fitness Center

Physical health and wellness are directly connected to both our overall mental well-being and capacity to learn. The Tiverton school district recognized their 1970s facilities were not only in drastic need of repairs but also no longer meeting the needs of their students or the growth of their educational techniques. The design transformed underused locker rooms and fitness areas to create modern, functional spaces that welcome student-athletes and the entire school community. The layout includes a classroom fitted with 21st-century technology used for health classes during the day and as an athletic team room after hours. The space allows coaches to review game footage while marking up plays on their new touchscreen monitors. The adjacent fitness center is equipped with both cardio and weight training equipment. The space is designed with flexibility in mind to adapt to changing needs and includes a training area for immediate medical services. The biggest upgrade is to the locker rooms. The design married numerous potentially conflicting needs including changing areas for both gym class users and off-hour athletic uses, teacher/coach presence needed for security while keeping student privacy in mind, gender-neutral and accessible changing facility options to provide a more inclusive environment, and separate facilities for both officials and opposing teams. After only a couple of months of use, the client reported a massive positive response from the student population and the entire school community and is working to offer open gym hours for faculty and staff.
