BTGA’s transformative design for the Knight Campus of Community College of Rhode Island was awarded the RI American Institute of Architects (AIAri) “Architecture of Rehabilitation Merit Award” in a ceremony this month. The vision and dedication of our staff have created a vibrant and welcoming environment for students, staff, and guests.

The panelists noted that our team was able to respect the existing Brutalist design of the 1972 Perkins + Will building while creating inviting, modern spaces that keep students engaged on campus, a primary goal of the CCRI administration.

The reimagining of the entry experience through the new enclosed ramp brightens the façade while providing much-needed relief from the elements. Our design also opened up the main entry, create a sense of arrival, and provided a large stair into the campus commons, a once underused space, now the main hub for activity and collaboration. The success of this redesign of the Knight Campus has sparked calls for renovations at CCRI’s other campus locations.

Our thanks to AIAri, the judges, our forward-looking client CCRI, and all our staff and consultants as we strive to create more of these exemplary educational spaces throughout Rhode Island.
