Community College of Rhode Island Entry Ramp
This project includes the addition of an entrance vestibule and the conversion of the existing ramp into an interior conditioned space. The building was originally designed to have a long entry ramp from the main parking lot into the heart of the building. This ramp was exposed to the harsh New England weather and was not ADA accessible. The renovation not only encloses the ramp and make the building accessible but provide a unique space to highlight student artwork. The exterior façade is comprised of insulated metal wall panels with precast panels forming the base of the ramp enclosure, providing a durable and contextual surface at the ground. To the North, the envelope has greater transparency with a splayed curtain wall system that accentuates the linearity of the ramp structure. This welcoming structure creates an entrance space that is compatible with the original concrete building, using similar tones and textures, yet the design interpretation has been constructed in glass and metal for transparency and permanence. We felt a great sense of responsibility in enhancing the front door into the historic College campus, creating a bright and inviting enclosure from the elements with a transitional connection between the megastructure and entrance plaza. The stepped interior ceiling clouds, in conjunction with the splayed exterior curtainwall, create a rhythm that transforms the linear procession into an inviting and vibrant art form.
